Dear Hackfest.tv participants

We at Agora Media have spend a few years building this list of partners, friends and companies who can help shape new TV experiences by offering up part (s) of their ecosystem for third party developers. In the spirit of hackathons, any ‘hacks’ you create at Hackfest belong to the group that created them, not to us, the organisers, or the sponsors. However, we welcome any of the participants to work with us in the future and leverage our powerful network (VC, broadcasters, producers, writers, designers, architects, CES, app developers and more) at Agora Media to help take ideas to market.

Creatives who have signed up from the TV production community, there are two Transmedia Platforms below - Conducttr and Galahad which you will find a lot less intimidating that all the scary code looking stuff! When you form groups, developers and coders will be able to help you understand what an API and SDK are!

For jury selection of prizes, it’s best to solely use the sponsored kits or a hybrid of sponsored and unsponsored for general prize categories.

This list is meant for hackfest.tv participants only. Please do not republish on the Internet. We worked very hard over a few years to build it. Thanks!

SPONSORS

OPERA

http://www.opera.com/business/tv/

http://www.opera.com/business/sdk/

Emulator is here - http://www.opera.com/business/tv/emulator/

The Opera TV Emulator gives developers the tools needed to build and test HTML5 and CE-HTML content for TVs on their PCs, which will emulate the target device’s environment with no need for physical access to the TV, set-top box or Blu-ray player. The Opera TV Emulator offers a direct, easy way to develop, test and debug and can serve as a reference implementation.

ITV

We are exposing several APIs for ITV show content these appear below.

Before we begin a couple of common parameters:

{target} - dictates the format of the response. Options are "xml" or "json"

{platform} - dictates the rights platform of the content, just stick wth dotcom as all other platforms give a subset of the content.

On with the APIs we want to give you!

ItvPlayerApiEpisodesByProgrammeName

Get episode details using a programme title.

Scheme:

api/{target}/{platform}/Episode/Programme/{parameter}

Example:

http://mercury.itv.com/api/xml/dotcom/Episode/Programme/DowntonAbbey

ItvPlayerApiMostWatched

The most watched shows on ITV Player

Scheme:

api/{target}/{platform}/Episode/MostWatched/{numberofResults}

Example:

http://mercury.itv.com/api/xml/dotcom/Episode/MostWatched/20ItvPlayerApiSearchAtoZ

Search for episodes by a selection of letters

Scheme:

api/{target}/{platform}/Programme/SearchAtoZ/{ characterFilter}

Example:

http://mercury.itv.com/api/xml/dotcom/Programme/SearchAtoZ/abc

ItvPlayerApiChannels

Return ITV shows by their broadcast channel (ITV1|ITV2|ITV3|ITV4|CITV)

Scheme:

api/{target}/{platform}/Programme/PerChannel/{channelName}/{resultCount}

Example:

http://mercury.itv.com/api/xml/dotcom/Programme/PerChannel/ITV1/10

Other useful goodness

Image management

Our image management service allow you to format and size the images for the content you are looking for. Most APIs return an image url, but this may be too large for your uses.

The image service takes an episode id and allows you to select the dimensions:

Scheme:

{platform}/Programme/PerChannel/{eposodeId}/image.jpg?{width}&{height}

Example:

http://mercury.itv.com/dotcom/episode/275965/image.jpg?w=480&h=272

Sample Content

For legal reasons we can't expose all of our content to you, but we want to you be able to have a play with a bit of video! So heres an example of what one of our playlists look like for a episode of this years dramatisation of Titanic!

http://blank.itv.com/hackfest/playlist_titanic.xml

It references 4 renditions of the same episode as H264 encoded mp4's (ACC audio), encoded at 400,600, 800 and 1200kbps

And because we're a commercial company we've included meta data for content breaks using the industry standard VAST specification (http://www.iab.net/guidelines/508676/digitalvideo/vsuite/vast/vast_copy)

Bonus points for ideas which make money!

MASHERY

Their  onboarding tool is API Explorer.

Mashery API Network offers over 50 public APIs for developers to get hands on with quickly, from ESPN to The Guardian to Rotten Tomatoes to Netflix:

http://developer.mashery.com/apis

Mashery's media APIs that developers can to use power their hacks at Hackfest.tv -

    Rotten Tomatoes - http://developer.rottentomatoes.com

    Viddy - http://developer.viddy.com

    Netflix - http://developer.netflix.com

    The Guardian - http://explorer.content.guardianapis.com

NY Times Movie Reviews - http://developer.nytimes.com

Other APIs in the Mashery API Network - http://developer.mashery.com/apis

Also, they encourage developers to use the API Explorer tool to play around and familiarize themselves with the APIs - http://developer.mashery.com/iodocs

PIAS MEDIA

Please use the [PIAS] MUSIC FIRST music channel - http://www.youtube.com/user/PIASENTERTAINMENT

They have these videos as MP4’s to play with

  1. Enter Shikari – Sssnakepit
  2. Enter Shikari – Gandhi mate Gandhi - Live
  3. Vitalic – Stamina
  4. Jim Jones Revue – Gotta Be About Me
  5. Jim Jones Revue – Documentary

They are available on this link - http://ce1fbc7e61a1057ffcff-4bd15c2ec53011299bba5ad15515654c.r8.cf2.rackcdn.com/TVHackfest-PIASMedia.zip

[PIAS] Media is the tech innovations agency that sits at the heart of [PIAS] International, we are really interested in the opportunities that transmedia and second screen technology can bring to music videos.  We’ve seen a lot of ideas, but where do you think music videos can go?

They’re looking for hackers to show their creativity and flair by doing something completely new with music video connectivity.  To do it, they’re giving you access to top artist’s music videos, as well as the chance to bag yourself some music goodies.

[PIAS] MUSIC FIRST is a gateway to some of the world’s best independent music, so if you’ve got a great idea then videos from [PIAS] artists Enter Shikari, Vitalic and Jim Jones Revue are available to hack.

They want to see the most adventurous and outrageous projects, but especially interested in interactive and experiential second screen apps, interesting use of API’s for discovery of music videos and clever use of any hardware like Kinect.  Make what you think could be the future!

The best hack will receive a stack of independent music and a pair of tickets to a London show!

METABROADCAST

They have full UK listings in Atlas from Press Association and have an agreement with them that can give people access to their data for personal use, prototyping and early stage development. So under these terms, the best thing is to start with one API key for the event which everyone can use. That seems easiest all round!

After the event they'll turn this key off, but anyone who has something they want to keep running should get in touch with them and they'll be able to create them a key under the same terms. They can also give people access to BBC data as that is open anyway and it's useful to be able to get everything in the same place. Where they've been able to match the PA and BBC data for the same programme, both will be returned in the same response.

Press Association data is made available without any licence fee under the following conditions:

  1. This is a research project and has no commercial model at this stage.
  2. PA will limit the free licence to six months and may agree an extension if appropriate.
  3. PA receive updates on progress of the work.
  4. PA have an opportunity to be involved in the commercial exploitation of any product.
  5. The data is marked Copyright: Press Association.
  6. PA require us to pass on your contact details, including any company or trading name for their records.
  7. Any fees payable to Red Bee Media on behalf of ITV are paid by yourself.

Right, with that out of the way, on to the fun stuff.

They have set up a key for everyone at the HackFest to use with access to PA and BBC data:

c4805b5a16e24eca928a70e1a0c6d796

You supply this using an apiKey parameter. You should also specifically ask for PA data by specifying a publisher of pressassociation.com.

So, for example, a schedule query for the next six hours on BBC One:

http://atlas.metabroadcast.com/3.0/schedule.json?apiKey=c4805b5a16e24eca928a70e1a0c6d796&publisher=pressassociation.com&from=now&to=now.plus.6h&channel_id=cbbh&annotations=channel,brand_summary,series_summary,extended_description,broadcasts

A few useful channel IDs:

BBC One: cbbh

BBC Two: cbbG

Channel 4: cbdj

Channel 5: cbdq

Others can be found via this call: http://atlas.metabroadcast.com/3.0/channels.json?available_from=pressassociation.com&order_by=title&offset=0&limit=100 (keep adding 100 to offset to page through more channels)

Interested people should sign up to the Atlas Google group, where hopefully some of the staff and other members of the group might be able to pick up and answer any questions.

Otherwise the best place to look for overview documentation of the data model is the Atlas site:

http://atlas.metabroadcast.com/#reference

The site also has a interactive API explorer which details all the requests that can be made and the valid parameters and annotations on each, which is the best resource for people getting up and running:

CLOUD SIGMA (NEED FREE ONLINE SERVER SPACE!)

We are currently organising free accounts for everyone! More information at Hackfest opening!

Here is what they  need:

1. Name and Surname (for the creation of the account)

2. E-mail to be used for the account + nickname tyou want to use for the account (for the creation of the account and the receipt of the log in credentials of each participant on your e-mail)

3. Country you come from (the system asks for this so that it grants different type of account; in their case they will modify this so that all participants receive one and the same capacity and resources but still they need it so that the system accepts the sole creation of an account)

4. Choose the currency of your "imaginable" money (actual funds in the account we will give) will be in - USD, CHF, EUR or GBP

 - for you to know: if you decide to stay our customer afterwards or later, the system cannot change the currency so they need their choice now

AURASMA

This is the online tool where participants in the event can create content and get the Aurasma SDK to put into an existing app for Android or iOS.  For a step by step video guide to how to make content (known as “Auras”), see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1yPhsqgp7o.

Steps for users to follow:

The Aurasma SDK is downloaded from the ‘Aurasma Studio’.  This is the online tool where you can create AR content, download the Aurasma SDK for Android or iOS and link the two together.  For a step by step video guide to how to make content (known as “Auras”), see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1yPhsqgp7o.

Here are the log-in details for the Hackfest 2012 Aurasma Studio Account:

URL – studio.aurasma.comhttp://studio.aurasma.com>

Password – aura123

For a guide on how to embed the kernel, see http://www.aurasma.com/partners/support/Aurasma%20Kernel%20Guidelines.pdf.

When requesting the kernel, it is important that your application name matches your Project Name in XCode or Eclipse.  Also note that you cannot use the terms ‘Aurasma’ or ‘Auras’ in your application name.  Once you have completed your application, the SDK will be at once ready to download.

A few participants have already been in touch – and whenever anyone does Aurasma says they will make them a separate account within 24 hours.
